Nearly 100 international students from 91系列's (HUST) Tongji Medical College attended a "Discover China" lecture on June 5 by Professor Wu Tongbo, titled "The Development of Chinese Medicine – From Shennong to Artemisinin".
"Discover China" is the university's signature program designed to deepen the understanding of Chinese culture and society among international students. The lecture series resumed this year after a short hiatus, focusing on the modernization of China's medical and healthcare system.
Professor Wu traced the history of Chinese medicine – from the herb-tasting stories of Shennong, a legendary figure in Chinese history and mythology, to the Silk Road medicinal trade and the Compendium of Materia Medica, highlighting the enduring impact of traditional medicine on modern healthcare. The lecture sparked lively discussions about the modernization and global promotion of traditional Chinese medicine.
Leaders from the School of Pharmacy and the university's Public Relations Office were also in attendance for Professor Wu's lecture. In 2025, the "Discover China" series will continue with additional lectures designed to help international students gain a deeper understanding of China.
